Fatal crash : Devils Slide
A Millbrae man has pleaded not guilty to charges that he caused a deadly Saturday accident on Devil’s Slide that resulted in the death of a 32-year-old woman.
The defendant, Thomas Harold Randall, 52, is facing vehicular manslaughter charges for allegedly driving while drunk. Law officials say Randall was driving up Highway 1 from Pescadero, where he had been drinking beer and vodka.
Witnesses reported Randall was speeding while driving north through the Coastside. On Devil’s Slide, Randall was driving on the wrong side of the road and turned too sharply to get back on the right side, striking another car with four passengers heading in the same direction.
One of the victims, Paola Casara, an Italian tourist, was thrown out of the car in the accident. She died as a result of her injuries. The other three passengers reportedly also suffered from lesser injuries.
California Highway Patrol officers responding to the accident reported that Randall had a .27 blood-alcohol content – more than three times the legal limit — and that he was confused at the scene.
Randall is currently in custody on a $100,000 bail, and he will have a pretrial hearing on Aug. 24.
